ENDTYMER is the inevitable weekly “music blog” series I’ve been working to avoid for some time. It hits at the end of every week with the intent of covering notable new releases, sharing news of new releases, and musing over various personal listening habits. It is a largely informal blog, has opinions, etc. so chill out a bit. I do my best to cover as much of everything I receive in some form regardless of genre or representation, don’t hesitate to send anything and everything my way: firstname.lastname@example.org
ALBUM OF THE WEEK
This week’s finest was a tougher call than most this year as I’d waffled between Jade‘s ‘The Pacification of Death‘ and Elder‘s ‘Innate Passage‘, both of which have been their own monstrous points of obsession. Ultimately wanted to err on the side of fealty, since I have been an Elder supporter since 2011 but I’ve been listening to Jade‘s record non-stop even beyond review. The choice between the two is arbitrary otherwise, both are fantastic and immersive non-categorical experiences which land among the best heavy music of the year. Otherwise you’ll want to check out the latest from Black Beast, Lucifericon, Hibernus Mortis, and Sépulcre. This week will cover the last two weeks worth of new release news.
BUD N’ BLOOM
Jarboe‘s ‘Sacrificial Cake‘ wasn’t what I’d wanted after I discovered ‘The Great Annihilator‘ circa ~1996 or so, but I’ve probably listened to it a hundred times more since. Any record that can so quickly and thoroughly rewrite the possibilities of what music can be / as expression rather than “product” / deserves some lengthy consideration in its own right. Anyhow this second (?) solo album from the artist still holds up, a trip in its own right that endures by way of painfully extracted yet charming experimental and occasionally industrial-tinged music. Anyhow, it is available remastered and on vinyl for the first time. If you’re not familiar, it should test your resolve:
NO PALMS EVER
“Zero palm mute trem pick riffing” is a strange point to make when looking for selling points on a homebrewed melodic black metal demo tape. The Enshrouded Eye have worked in some Departure Chandelier-esque strands into this thing per their haunted keyboard sound, give it a few minutes to work up to “A Cold Kingdom of Suffering”. Shows some promise, has a mood.
If you love the ‘Enemy of the Music Business‘ era of Napalm Death as much as I do but you’ve not heard shit worth a damn lately in that vein (did you miss Antigama‘s record?!) here’s a swift ten-thousand kicks in the ass. Greek grindcore group Vile Species released their latest 10″ mLP ‘Against the Values of Civilization‘ a while back and it deserves a bit more attention!
W.T.C. Productions have announced January 10th, 2023 as the release date for THY DARKENED SHADE‘s third full-length album, ‘Liber Lvcifer II: Mahapralaya‘. The Luciferian black metal band have taken nine years to follow up their second album, a well-loved opus that’d clearly set the bar high for future work. The band comments: “Years in the making, Liber Lvcifer II: Mahapralaya is for sure our most difficult-to-be-made album to date and will get unleashed soon on the filthy cosmic plane. Hymnic yet progressive, exploring the concept of Lucifer’s manifestations through religions once more, through real occult practice and experience. Coming from exactly the same source as Liber Lvcifer I but releasing a totally different expression of it. After adversity and hardships, we are definitely proud to share it with all of you who are willing to experience a spiritual black metal manifestation of the void.” Their work and their devotion shows on this brand-new track “Into Eerie Catacombs”:
After twelve years in the wastes, dwelling in preparation for triumphant return Greek black metal tyrants DEVISER will return with their latest full-length ‘Evil Summons Evil‘ by way of Hammerheart Records this coming February 10th, 2023. Underrated band, but one of my favorites from the old occult mysteries of Hellenic black metal. Check out the excellent cover artwork by Kris Verwimp and the lyric video for “Absence of Heaven”:
Psychedelic rock group DEAD MEADOW have released their latest single/video “Valmont’s Pad” which is taken from their upcoming album ‘Force Form Free‘ which arrives this coming December 9th as part of Blues Funeral Recordings‘ special PostWax series. It is a cover song, a deep cut and a trip to the car wash on shrooms by the looks of it. The band comments: “Valmont’s Pad is our version of a song from the Ennio Morricone-composed soundtrack to the movie Danger Diabolik. This movie has been a longtime favorite of ours and we’ve toyed with the idea of covering this for years. The video is a celebration of the warm womb-like nature of my favorite local car wash and was shot entirely therein. The colors in the video, coincidentally, happened to be remarkably reminiscent of the ones found in the original movie.“:
Finnish black metal band GRIEVE have revealed a new track “Deep in Ice-Cold Mountains” from the band’s unexpected second album, ‘Wolves of the Northern Moon‘, which will release early next year via Werewolf Records. They basically put out a record and said, eh, done. But they explain in clear enough terms: “We said we’d end the project for good, but we lied, […] We exhumed it.” yeah, well, why not? The song is kinda wild, obviously going for 90’s black metal esotericism and finding it:
I am a huge fan ofItalian death metal band HOUR OF PENANCE so this is just a quick PSA that they’ve announced reissue of their 2019 album Misotheism on January 27th via the good folks at Agonia Records. The album will receive a new jewelcase CD, limited LP reissue and will be made available on tape, for the first time. Big album, balls out, brutal, underrated eldritch death in my opinion:
Long-running Italian stoner/doom metal act GODWATT have been at work on their latest full-length ‘Vol. III’, which will be released on CD, LP and digital format on December 20th this year by way of Time To Kill Records. Check out the video for their first single “Signora Morte”:
One of my most anticipated noise rock re-ups this year: Reptilian Records have announced the December 9th release of ‘Mock‘, the new album from Chicago-based noise rock trio SALVATION. This’ll be their fourth release and these guys are the real thing from my point of view, I’d loved ‘Year of the Fly‘ (2019) and “Backwards Bunny” suggests I’ll like ‘Mock‘ even more:
Oklahoma-based noise rock/sludge metal band CHAT PILE put out one of the best screaming-ass skronk rock records of the year yet that’ll not be last we’ll hear from ’em before their already in the works second LP is done. The Flenser have announced they’ll release the cassette and vinyl versions of the band’s score for the film Tenkiller, which released last week (November 18th). It won’t all be fraught noise metal, though, they’ve suggested there’ll be at least one country piece on the OST: “The music we made for Tenkiller is quite a bit different than what you may come to expect from us. We were given the freedom to really experiment and explore territories that we’ve never done before.” The album and the film are both available digitally now:
This coming December 21st Portuguese black metal label Signal Rex will release the sophomore full-length from SPECTRAL CORRUPTION, Requiem, on CD format. Vinyl and tape versions will follow next year. The Slovakian project formed in 2020 and released an album soon after yet I’d missed it entirely. Check out the first preview song over on Bandcamp and see if they’re your thing.
Horror Pain Gore Death Productions have announced they’ll released the final album from reformed and soon defunct Philadelphia death metal band PERCUSSOR. ‘Ravenous Despondency‘ rips based on what I’ve heard and will be released on December 16th on CD and Digital formats. These guys go way back as latecomers in 1996 who’d quickly split up and reformed in 2014. Their last record sounds frustrated as fuck, plenty of riffs too. Check out “Moldering Existence”:
Peruvian ‘old school’ death metal band SPECTRAL SOULS have signed a deal with overlords Hammerheart Records to release their debut full-length this coming February 17th, 2023. Originally released in March of this year now receiving worldwide distribution. If you’re as big on late 80’s and early 90’s death metal classics you’ll likely enjoy their intent here:
Canadian death-thrash metal band SARKASM have revealed the cover artwork and first single from their long awaited debut album, ‘As Empires Decay‘. It’ll be released on 12″LP, CD, Cassette and Digital formats next January 24th 2023, through Xtreem Music. Riffs! Thrash riffs, even. “The Collapse” has be stoked for this one!
Dark Essence Records have announced they’ll release the fourth full-length album from Norwegian black/heavy metal band SLEGEST, ‘Avstand‘ this coming January 20th, 2023. They’ve suggested the album takes inspiration from Nietzsche’s The Birth of Tragedy. Slegest frontman, Stig Ese Eliassen explains that things haven’t changed drastically for this latest album: “We operate well within the framework we have created for ourselves in these past records. While our sound in this way clearly has quite a traditional streak, I´m confident that our take on metal offers something different. Our goal is – of course – that in the end, our material is truly awesome and sinister sounding! We also have upped the tempo a bit this time around.” the first single is “Innsikt”:
Edged Circle Productions have announced March 3rd, 2023 as the international release date for PHANTOM FIRE‘s second full-length album, ‘Eminente Lucifer Libertad‘ and so far it seems like this one smokes. The video for brand-new single “De Taptes Dans” definitely impressed me as the song goes on stabbing at its thrashing riffs with intent to kill, a convincing first blood:
Oakland stoner/heavy metal band BLACKWÜLF are set to release their fourth studio album ‘Thieves & Liars‘ this February 3rd, 2023 through Ripple Music. They’ve got a new video/single “Shadow” which the band comments on: “It expresses the dark side that exists in everyone that, if unchecked, can creep to control motives, emotions, and actions. Often hidden beneath superficial layers of pretenses and false narratives, the “Shadow” lurks in the background, a self-manufactured darkness that can control from within. Always attached, and forever following, the shadow waits for its opportunity for the light to change, to consume all in its darkness…“
Long-running Washington state-based heavy rock band MOS GENERATOR have released the second single, “Burn Away The Years,” from their forthcoming tenth studio album, ‘Time//Wounds‘ which is due out December 16th. The band explain: “‘Burn Away The Years’ is another song about time and how it gives and takes. Like many of the songs on the Time//Wounds album it’s hard to pinpoint the direct source of inspiration. The song was arranged and recorded in one day in between a series of shows we had and I have to say that the final outcome is much different than I would have expected from hearing the rundown demo. The synthesizers, horns and Mellotron strings mixed with the seamless series of tempo and mood changes makes the track feel like seventies prog – pop with some underground eighties sprinkled over the top.” and it is certainly a catchy piece:
Spanish melodic black metal band FROZEN DAWN have announced they’ve teamed up with Transcending Obscurity Records for their latest full-length album. ‘Frozen Kings‘ will release this coming February 10th, 2023 on all formats. The first single is “Frozen Kings”, down to its bones this is a heavy metal song with some solid triumphal lead melodies at work:
Polish psychedelic black metal abstractionists ENTROPIA are finally ready with their fourth studio album. ‘Total‘ will released this coming March 17th, 2023 via Agonia Records. You might know them from the Cyberpunk 2077 soundtrack (see: “Future Drugs”) or their underrated 2018 LP ‘Vacuum‘. The band comments on the new album “It consolidates the experiences and skills we’ve amassed throughout the years, and constitutes a standalone, complete and utter creation; a totality, which reflects of the band’s chaotic spirit.” we only get the tracklisting and album art for now.
Toruń, Poland based occult psychedelic doom metal act MAG have just released a new video single “Alchemik”, from their upcoming second full-length album ‘Mag II: Pod Krwawym Księżycem‘. Expect heavy stoner doom sounds, blackened doom intensity and dark themes on the album. The record was released on November 25th via independent Polish label Piranha Music:
