A weekly feature focusing on select heavy music news, primarily involving new and upcoming releases with a list of ’em provided at the end. This also serves as a week in review, collecting all of the most recent content on Grizzly Butts in a brief additional list. Want to see what came out this week? Read the “Annihilate This Week” column every week. If I can’t hear it, I won’t cover it! If you have new releases, show announcements, or important heavy music news that’ll be relevant or interesting to folks send it to: grizzlybutts@hotmail.com
THIS WEEK IN NEWS (6/05/21 – 6/11/21)
- Chilean death/black metal crew BLACK CEREMONIAL KULT have returned to the fire with a new EP or, more accurately their first official EP after several splits and demo tapes over the last several years. Godz ov War Productions have announced they will release ‘Crowned in Chaos‘ this coming June 14th on CD, LP, cassette tape and digitally. At nearly 40 minutes long this is more or less their long awaited debut at this point and I’m looking forward to it next week. For now check out a preview track over on Bandcamp: [LINK]
- Nuclear War Now! Productions have announced September 1st as the release date for a collection early recordings from Brazil’s GENOCÍDIO titled ‘The Death‘, on vinyl LP format. These guys started just past the first wave of evil heavy metal in their country having formed in 1986 in Sao Paolo, these early works are brilliant examples of the seminal black metal story churning around the world at the time and their whole discography develops in interesting ways afterwards. ‘The Grave‘ specifically compiles their legendary self-titled 1988 EP live tracks from the same year as well as nearby demo recordings. Support this release since we need proper issues of ‘Depression’ (1990) and ‘Hoctaedrom’ (1993) which have been poorly done or quickly sold out in the past. Fantastic surreal paintings on all of ’em! Check out the whole release over on Bandcamp: [LINK]
- Nameless Grave Records have announced a revised version of Vancouver-based melodic death metal band DUNGEON SERPENT‘s ‘World Of Sorrows‘, for tentative mid-July release on CD with cassettes coming from Desert Wastelands eventually. Looking forward to this one. Released digitally earlier in the year, the original record was brilliant but certainly raw and I gather they’ve cleaned up the programmed drums and it sounds like they’ve re-amped the guitars, or had Dan Lowndes over at Resonance Sound Studio give it a serious boost. Check out the results via the opening track, “Necroscope”, is up on their Bandcamp: [LINK]
- Soulseller Records have announced they’ve signed of Norwegian black metal band SVARTELDER. They are currently working on their new (no title yet) studio album which is scheduled for a release in the first part of 2022. Follow Soulseller Records on Facebook to keep up: [LINK]
- Mexican-American doomgazers LOW FLYING HAWKS have released the first single from their forthcoming third full-length ‘Fuyu‘, which will arrive on August 27th via Magnetic Eye Records. I loved their previous work and this new song “Subatomic Sphere” is even better, go run over to YouTube if you’re a fan of ethereal psychedelic doom: [LINK]
- Italo-Deutsche death metal band HUMATOR signed to Italian label Time To Kill Records (Fulci, etc.) for the release of a new album which will see official release in late 2021. This news comes over a decade beyond their debut. Keep up with the news and follow Time to Kill Records Facebook: [LINK]
- The likely pairing of BOTANIST and THIEF have shared details of forthcoming split-album ‘Cicatrix / Diamond Brush‘ which will hit stores on August 27th alongside the new, third full-length from Thief, which is an electronic project from D. Neal of Botanist. Not sure what to make of this yet, what I’ve heard seems to be part of a bigger piece. The first single from the split album “Antirrhinum” which can be heard over on YouTube: [LINK]
- British blackened hardcore/sludge metal band MASTIFF have announced they will release their third full-length album ‘Leave Me The Ashes Of The Earth‘ this coming September 10th via Entertainment One. Their sound has always been oppressive and “beatdown” heavy in some sense but this first song “Endless” is practically slamming itself upon me. If the whole album is this nuclear and overblown I’m into it. Check out “Endless” over on Bandcamp: [LINK]
- NOTABLE ALBUMS AT PRESS THIS WEEK FROM: Temple of Dread, Wald Krypta, Kita, Sxuperion, Exil, Year of No Light, Love is Red, Moon Machine, Concilium, Replicant, Bong-Ra, Fulanno, Unendlich, Musk Ox, Cognitive, Hammers of Misfortune, Lunar Funeral, Horte, Perilaxe Occlusion, and several more. Look for coverage in the near future. Don’t see your album listed? Send it to me: grizzlybutts@hotmail.com

SITE WEEK IN REVIEW (6/05/21 – 6/11/21)
- Annihilate This Week 6/05/21: “To master and to understand the sickness of every soul.”
- This year …From the Tomb becomes Annihilate This Week, still focusing on new releases from the week but now accumulating a New Releases list/discussion in addition to short reviews for around 5-10 new albums each week. It will now post every Saturday (or Sunday) to better fit my schedule.
- This week I chose to cover 9 New Releases from May 22nd-28th. Favorites being Gorgon, Blot Mine, Eremit.
Slow news week, I suppose. Reviews for Seum, Atrium, Gnosis and Red Fang will be up soon. Working on a bunch of other projects so, reviews/features will be light for a couple of weeks.
