SYNCHRONY: News, Week in Review & Upcoming Releases (5/07/21)

A weekly feature focusing on select heavy music news, primarily involving new and upcoming releases with a list of ’em provided at the end. This also serves as a week in review, collecting all of the most recent content on Grizzly Butts in a brief additional list. Want to see what came out this week? THIS WEEK IN NEWS (5/01/21 – 5/07/21)

  • W.T.C. Productions have announced the upcoming release of ‘SamaeLilith: A Conjunction of The Fireborn‘ a four way collaborative album between THY DARKENED SHADE, AMESTIGON, INCONCESSUS LUX LUCIS, and SHAARIMOTH which is set for release this June 30th on double-CD and double LP vinyl. Roughly thirteen years in the making this split album is conceptually linked by the four aspects of The Bloodline of Fire, which I believe is linked to or in application of certain gnostic ideals.   • Absolutist Swedish black metal classic act NIDEN DIV. 187 will receive an honorable fine quality vinyl box set issue of the ‘Impergium’ album and ‘Towards Judgement’ EP this coming May 21st via Dawnbreed Records and De:Nihil Records. A sincere but short-lived project between members of Dawn, Thy Primordial and A Canorous Quintet you can feel the feral seedlings of each band’s sophisticated yet brutal attack within these raw and uncompromising works. Perhaps not the best known gem of the Swedish second wave but still a vital entry, especially if you love early Marduk, and the aforementioned bands.   • Blood Harvest Records has announced next week, on May 14th they will release a four-way split album between BLOOD SPORE, COAGULATE, SOUL DEVOURMENT and GUTVOID on 12″ vinyl LP. I’m mostly in it for the Gutvoid song but I like the Blood Spore track they’ve previewed “Olfactory Cordycipitaceae Ingress”. Check it out over on Bandcamp: [LINK]
  • Godz Ov War Productions have announced their signing of Polish progressive black metal band JARUN for their third full-length ‘Rok Spokojnego Słońca‘, which will be released on May 21st on regular and special edition CD. They’ve shared a music video for the first single, “W światło stycznia”, a remarkable way to introduce the album. Listen/watch over on YouTube: [LINK]
  • Nuclear War Now! Productions has announced August 1st as the release date for the third album from Florida based black metal band GNOSIS which they’re calling ‘Omens From the Dead Realm‘, on vinyl LP and cassette tape formats. The digital version has been out for full preview, but not purchase, for months. This release is just incredible if you are a fan of Greek black metal, they’ve done an intense job crafting their own bloody altar to the greats while making their own fresh sacrifices.   • German death metal band CASKET have premiered a lyric video for “The Rope”, the first single from their upcoming EP ‘Urn‘ out June 4th via Neckbreaker Records on CD, gatefold vinyl and digital. These folks have been around since about 1990 and have pretty much stuck to their guns in playing straight forward old school death metal. The guitarist has his own flair though, which is song showcases nicely. The EP will have five new songs and some live tracks tacked on the end to round things out.   • Svart Records have announced the first release from Finnish black metal act I AM THE NIGHT will arrive this coming June 11th via a 12″ maxi single. ‘Hear Me O’ Unmaker‘ will be a limited edition release and include an Emperor cover, fitting for their sort of polished 1994 Norwegian black metal sound, which tends towards atmospheric rather than ‘symphonic’. They’ve also announced ‘While The Gods Are Sleeping’ the project’s debut album will release in late autumn. I Am the Night features members of Omnium Gatherum, Paradise Lost, Insomnium, and Horizon Ignited, I think they are also involved with that one black metal cartoon but I’d rather not do the research. Excellent energy to this song, the mid-90’s ideal is there in a clean and uncomplicated form, check out “Hear Me O’ Unmaker” over on YouTube: [LINK]
  • Plegaic Records have shared the third single and album opener, “The Hound”, from Swedish noise rock/post-hardcore band BLESSINGS new album ‘Biskopskniven‘, out May 21 via Pelagic Records. A dissonant and haunting opening to an eclectic and wholly dark trip. I wasn’t sure I’d be into it at first but this album seems to be onto something beyond the usual spastic hardcore/post-metal combination. Check out “The Hound” over on Bandcamp: [LINK]
  • Rural California black and astral death project SXUPERION have announced their new record, ‘Auscultating Astral Monuments‘, will release this coming June 25th on Bloody Mountain Records. The first preview song “Ophanim Mechanical Drive” bodes well for the release, offering some strong use of keyboard/synth movements driving the rhythmic center of the guitar compositions. Deep underground stuff but effective and signature work. Check the song out over on Bandcamp: [LINK]
  • Helter Skelter Productions have announced July 24th as the release date for NECROMANTICAL INVOCATIONS debut mini-album, ‘Dogme el Rituel de la Haute Magie‘, on CD and 12” vinyl formats. A solo avant-garde black metal project from Echetleos (Caedes Cruenta, Kawir) you can rest assured this one is pure evil and hugely atmospheric, a bit along the lines of Necromantia and Denial of God.   • Nuclear War Now! Productions have announced August 1st as the release date for the twenty two year in waiting second album of Sweden’s brutal black metal hammerers VASSAGO, ‘Storm of Satan‘, will be available on vinyl LP and cassette tape formats. Vassago released their ‘Knights From Hell’ album on No Fashion just as the label was cresting, releasing increasingly popular bands. They’d gotten lost in the shuffle a bit back then but have long been a fine example of grinding brutality which you can hear on their first preview track “Storm of Satan” over on Bandcamp: [LINK]
  • Icelandic black metal act MANNVEIRA have announced their debut full-length debut, ‘Vitahringur‘, will arrive via Dark Descent Records this coming July 2nd on CD, vinyl and digital. Formed back in 2010 and making serious waves between 2014-2016 the band have long been dormant in preparation of this highly anticipated work.   • 20 Buck Spin have announced the second LP from Seattle death metal quartet CEREBRAL ROT, setting the date for June 25th for ‘Excretion Of Mortality‘ on CD, cassette and digital with the vinyl to come on the 30th of July. I’m getting some sewer poopin’ vibes from the titles so far with the first single being “Bowels Of Decrepitude” and all. Not into poop-death much but I do like Cerebral Rot a ton, it sounds like they’ve gone for a different atmosphere for this one ultra drainpipe echoing vocals and thunder tuned riffs.   • Blood Harvest Records have set August 6th as the release date for a new EP from Canadian death metal duo PERILAXE OCCLUSION titled ‘Raytraces of Death‘, on 12” vinyl format. These guys kinda picked up steam after a late December release for their first demo took a month to catch on. I’m a fan, bought the first one on CD looks like this one came together pretty fast. SITE WEEK IN REVIEW (5/01/21 – 5/07/21)

Since I’d only written three reviews the previous week, how about fourteen this week? Some of them were shorter releases and more ‘to the point’ reviews. I am trying to get used to the idea of moving a bit quicker with my thoughts, covering more music while keeping the quality focused on the stuff that warrants examination. Been on a rock kick later in the week (new Snail, Demons, Throat) and got a bit sidetracked looking for noise rock to cover. For the weekend I’m working on Fyrnask, Bretus, and Book of Wyrms reviews.
