NEWS, Week in Review & Upcoming Releases (4/30/21)

A weekly feature focusing on select heavy music news, primarily involving new and upcoming releases with a list of ’em provided at the end. This also serves as a week in review, collecting all of the most recent content on Grizzly Butts in a brief additional list. Want to see what came out this week? Read the “Annihilate This Week” column every week. If I can’t hear it, I won’t cover it! If you have new releases, show announcements, or important heavy music news that’ll be relevant or interesting to folks send it to: grizzlybutts@hotmail.com

THIS WEEK IN NEWS (4/24/21 – 4/30/21)

  • Leeds, England based death metal band MORTUARY SPAWN sent in a link for their debut EP after it’d released so, I figure this is a strong way to start off the news week. ‘Spawned From the Mortuary’ finds a solid mix of the chunky thug-beaten stuff everyone is doing these days and some pretty keen riffs otherwise. “Thorax and Abdomen” is the song I’d recommend: [LINK]
  • Shadow Records have announced July 9th will be the release date for the debut album from Swedish black metal project HINSIDES titled ‘Under Betlehems brinnande stjärna‘, on CD, vinyl LP, and cassette tape. Hinsides is a raw and unusually bent side-project from M.A. who is best known for his work in Ultra Silvam, grotesque and shrill yet undoubtedly layered and purposeful ancient black metal sounds. Check out the two preview tracks they have up on Bandcamp: [LINK]
  • Nameless Grave Records have released CARDIAC ARREST‘s ‘Haven for the Insane‘ on vinyl for the first time ever. Originally released on CD in 2010 by Ibex Moon Records, this third full-length from the band was arguably where the band had found their footing. If you haven’t heard obscure Chicago death metal demo-only band Dogod, Cardiac Arrest’s guitarist was also in that band in the early 90’s, so, they’d covered one of their songs for this album. Hunt down that demo if you can find it. You can buy a copy of the LP at the label’s store: [LINK]
  • Horror Pain Gore Death Productions have announced they will release the new album from death metal act NECRONEMESISSome Things Should Stay Underground‘ this coming June 4th on CD and digital. The album is currently available for pre-order. Necronemesis is a morbid ‘old school’ brutal death metal band featuring Rick Rozz, a guitarist folks will recognize from early incarnations of Death and Massacre. Solid thrashing stuff based on what I’ve heard so far. Check out their Bandcamp for yourself: [LINK]
  • Russian folk/black metal band SIETA‘s new album ‘Novgorod‘, is set to be released this coming June via Earth And Sky Productions. Fans of Forefather, Moonsorrow and black/folk metal in general will want to check this one out. The album tells the history of Novgorod, the countrywide conversion by force of the old Slavonic church, lots of interesting history and details to unpack. They’ve got a couple of preview tracks up on Bandcamp so far: [LINK]
  • Peaceville Records have announced DARKTHRONE‘s latest album will be titled ‘Eternal Hails…‘ and feature a set of five “longer, doomier” pieces. I was a fan of their previous record so it sounds like this will be even more of a dive into the dirging 70’s rock and 80’s doom influenced direction. This new record will be released this coming June 25th with several vinyl and box set options available. For now you can hear a brief teaser and then head over to Bandcamp and pre-order: [LINK]
  • Signal Rex have announced June 21st as the release date for a new mini-album from Portugal’s die-hard raw black metal act IRAE, it will be titled ‘Dangerovz Magick Zpells from the Mesziah of Death‘, on six-panel noble digipak CD format.: [LINK]
  • Hessian Firm have announced Philadelphia-based melodic black metal band POLEMICIST will return for a sophomore full-length release ‘Return of the Sophist‘ this coming June 25th. They’ve described it as a concept album based on Chaerephon’s journey to the Oracle at Delphi. We can tentatively assume this lines up with Plato’s depiction of the character. It sounds as some progressive intent has worked into their melodic black/death metal sound and I am sure it will be impressive, their first album was underrated, by myself included. The first preview track “The Delphic Temple Part I – Consulting the Pythia” is available over on Bandcamp: [LINK]
  • Hammerheart Records have announced their signing of Dutch death/doom metal veterans EXTREME COLD WINTER alongside the reveal of their debut full-length ‘World Exit‘ which is set to release this coming October on CD and LP. Extreme Cold Winter features infamous underground legends from Beyond Belief, Severe Torture, Officium Triste. Great news! And really nice painting for the album art, too. Follow their Facebook to stay up to date with what’s up: [LINK]
  • Godz ov War Productions have announced Kraków based black metal band CIEŃ will forge a new beginning, a breakthrough on their third full-length album ‘Redemption‘, which is set for a Fall 2021 release. Since their last official release they’ve added vocalist Ashgan (ex-Blaze of Perdition) and a new guitarist Lycain (Pandrador) to the line-up. ‘Til there is more to say, check out their back catalog over on Bandcamp: [LINK]
  • Helter Skelter Productions have announced July 24th as the release date for LUNAR FUNERAL‘s second album, ‘Road to Siberia‘, on CD, vinyl LP, and cassette tape. Aptly titled as a cold desert trudging blues n’ doomed oily waltz of a record, this one spreads its vibe thick n’ quick as it goes. I love this stuff and I’d say fans of Wailin’ Storms should definitely check in, and you can pretty easily do so as it is available to stream right now over on Bandcamp: [LINK]
  • Bloody sorcery! Osmose Productions have announced June 11th as the release date for the sixth album from French black metal tyrant GORGON which will be titled ‘Traditio Satanae‘, on CD and vinyl LP. Tearing right for the throat and expressing his malevolent point of view within seconds this first preview track “Blood of Sorcerer” is exactly how a black metal album should be introduced, knives out and crosses upside down. Check out “Blood of Sorcerer” over on YouTube: [LINK]
  • Svart Records have announced a new album by HEATHEN RITES a doom metal project from Mikael Monks of Burning Saviours. ‘Heritage‘ will release this coming August 27th. The first single, “Midnight Sun” released today has a sort of post-rock feel to its extended intro and outro sections though the grind of its center is a distinct sort of choral indie rock inspired doom-riffing sound. Well, think of it as a new angle on post-doom metal that doesn’t forget the big gnarly guitar sound. See how “Midnight Sun” lands upon you over on YouTube: [LINK]
  • Chaos Records have announced July 17th as the release date for HELL STRIKE‘s debut mini-album, ‘Hellstrike‘, on CD. Featuring members from Ascended Dead, Ritual Necromancy, and Bloodsoaked etc. these guys focus on ultra fast riff-crammed working some intense density into just 24 minutes of extreme death, think of Sadistic Intent to start. Check out the first preview track “Morbid Abnormality of the Ages” over on Bandcamp: [LINK]
  • NOTABLE ALBUMS AT PRESS THIS WEEK FROM: Killing Addiction, Polemicist, Irae, Lycanthro, Ethereal Self, Ruach Raah, Gorgon, Code, Reinforcer, Tundra, End You, Sieta, Worm Shepherd, Lord of Pagathorn, Pharaoh, No Light Escapes, Archangel A.D., Exorcist, Alluvial, Digital Negative, Shun, Dez Dare, and several more. IFRINN – ‘Caledonian Black Magick’ (The Sinister Flame)

SITE WEEK IN REVIEW (4/24/21 – 4/30/21)

  • Annihilate This Week 4/24/21: “Then was there terror, and the hair stood up.”
    • This year …From the Tomb becomes Annihilate This Week, still focusing on new releases from the week but now accumulating a New Releases list/discussion in addition to short reviews for around 5-10 new albums each week. It will now post every Saturday (or Sunday) to better fit my schedule.
    • This week I chose to cover 6 New Releases from April 30th. Favorite being Amorite, Plasmodium, Thirsty Demon.
  • The Top 20 Albums of April | 2021
    • Thoughts on twenty of the best albums from this month, links to streams and full reviews.
    • Includes: Wheel, Nekromantheon, Wode, Fuoco Fatuo, Insane, Ungfell, Obsolete, Ifrinn, Universally Estranged, Spectral Lore, Arabrot, 夢遊病者 [SLEEPWALKER], Altarage, Aggravator, Forsmán, Autarcie, Domkraft, Odal, Fyrnask, Heavy Feather.
  • An Early Stream of “Dark Moon Rising” from ARMNATT’s ‘Eternal Flame’ LP (2021) | PREMIERE
    • There are few things that make the argument for “simple but effective” more resonant than raw black metal and Portugal has been host to some of the best the sub-genre has to offer for years. Thanks to Armnatt + Signal Rex and their representatives for allowing us to share “Dark Moon Rising” from the band’s third album, out on May 28th.

This week I was fairly caught up in getting everything finalized and put together for some proper announcements that’ll allow my own imprint Spirit Coffin Publishing [BigCartel] to launch, the Facebook to go up, and the Instagram to start posting. So, I’ll have to push Annihilate This Week to Monday (May 3rd) and get to work on reviews for Helslave, Ifrinn, Nuclear Revenge, Fyrnask, Rituals of the Dead Hand, Destruction and Domkraft. Also the Death SS book!
