THIS WEEK IN NEWS (4/10/21 – 4/16/21)

  • Relaying XenoKorp transmission… The Korporation has announced a May 14th released date for French blackened/death Metal band OTARGOS’ digital-only live album to celebrating the band’s 20th anniversary, the title will be ‘20 Years of Human Termination‘, and was recorded live at 2015’s Kaotoxin Fest II at l’Aéronef in Lille, France. Fans of their ‘Xeno Kaos’ album will note the setlist celebrated the release of that record. In the meantime they’ve also announced the seventh full-length from the band is in the works with details to come in the near future. Go follow XenoKorp on Facebook, die-hard French extreme metal folks around in some form since the early 90’s: [LINK]
  • Sentient Ruin Laboratories have announced they’ll collaborate with Canadian hardcore noise-punk group LAST AGONY for their debut album ‘The Imminent Slaughter‘, which will release this coming May 7th. Having generated some pretty immediate hype within Toronto over the last few years, particularly with their self-titled debut 7″ back in 2019, it sounds like these guys are still pissed and fully conscious when gauging the first preview track “Diabolism”. Grinding, crusted, and showered with noxious noise. Check it out over on Bandcamp: [LINK]
  • Masked and luxuriously trim French progressive metal project MALDOROR have revealed a music video for the third song from their debut album “Chant III (Larmes)”. The piece was co-composed with vocalist/lyricist Laure Le Prunenec (Rïcïnn, Corpo Mente, Öxxö Xööx, Igorrr) and features a haunting vocal performance as its centerpiece. The idea behind this first album is to transcribe the work of Lautréamont or, Uruguayan-born French poet/writer Isidore Lucien Ducasse, whose Les Chants de Maldoror (1869) was a vital influence upon burgeoning surrealist art movement(s) and situationist revolutionaries in France. Based on this first song, it promises an inspired and entirely refined sound. Watch the video for “Chant III (Larmes)” over on YouTube or Facebook: [LINK]
  • Scottish heavy/doom metal quartet KING WITCH and Listenable Records have announced their upcoming ‘Worship the Riffs’ digital-only EP will release on May 21st. The release will be comprised of two cover songs, the first to be revealed being a stellar rendition of “Children of the Sea” from Black Sabbath’s ‘Heaven and Hell’ and the second will be Metallica’s “The Thing That Should Not Be”. If anyone can carry such an iconic Dio-driven piece it is sindomitable vocalist Donnelly and the rest of these folks, they’ve done an absolutely killer job with it. Check out King Witch’s version of “Children of the Sea” over on YouTube: [LINK]
  • Osmose Productions have announced May 28th as the international release date for the thirteenth full-length from Finnish freaks IMPALED NAZARENE which will be titled ‘Eight Headed Serpent‘ and issued on CD, vinyl LP, and cassette tape. The last one was great, loved the album art for it, so here’s to anticipating this one too, even if there are no skeleton penises on the cover. Metric tonnes of energy on this first preview song “Goat of Mendes”, go get hit by it: [LINK]
  • Hell’s Headbangers Records have announced May 21st as the release date for the latest EP from Chilean black/death thrashers PERVERSOR titled ‘Psicomoro‘, on CD format with the 12″ vinyl LP version coming in October. The band released the raw and brutal EP as a cassette tape last year during the ongoing drain of pandemia so, it is good to see that it is getting a more widespread release worthy of this great band. : [LINK]
  • Caligari Records sets May 6th as the international release date for ŹMIARĆVIEŁY‘s debut demo, ‘čornaje połymia’, on cassette tape. An old school black and raw form resonates from this idiosyncratic tape with shades of doom and, well, check out the first preview track “IIII” and see what you think: [LINK]
  • Purity Through Fire have set May 31st as the release date for Finnish melodic black metal act GOATS OF DOOM‘s highly anticipated sixth album, ‘Shiva‘, on CD, A5 digipack, and cassette tape with the vinyl version to follow. Mystic, arcane, and tainted by sombre melodicism these fellowes are a strange breed apart from expectation and ‘Shiva’ seems to be a strong push in a brilliant direction. Still necro, very much black metal, but keen on visiting other worlds. Check out the wild cover art from Spellgoth himself and the song “Armon Varjot” over on YouTube: [LINK]
  • You’ll often find folks happening upon XASTHUR‘s “new” sound suggesting this change to acoustic/dark folk, often termed “doomgrass” and “acid folk” is novel and interesting yet, he’d effectively shape-shifted over a decade ago (initially via Nocturnal Poisoning) having produced several profound works, usually with/as a trio of performers. Not an emphatic statement on my part but, I do think a lot of the artist’s work in his youth cannot compare with the very “real” and present statements his lyrics convey today, be they adventures into private whims or profound statements; His latest album ‘Victims of the Times‘ follows a thread of records specifically speaking on equal terms with what many would consider the “dregs” of human society, conveying a direct yet simply lain depiction of what the press materials describe aptly as “soul-troubling Americana”. Ah well, I’ve been impressed in the past as a fan of modern folk music, the album releases via Lupus Lounge/Prophecy Productions this coming July 9th. Check out the title track on Bandcamp: [LINK]
  • Sheboygan, Wisconsin based modern thrash metal band TOXIC RUIN have released a lyric video video for the title track from their sophomore album ‘Nightmare Eclipse‘ which’ll find them collaborating with M-Theory Audio for release. The title track and first single “Nightmare Eclipse” showcases their own take on the Revocation style of death metal influenced modern groove metal. Though I do not like the vocal layering and do not yet find their sound interesting I’m interested to see how the rest of the album pans out since they are skilled and have some sense of post-Pantera “thrash” metal riffing. Check out “Nightmare Eclipse” over on YouTube: [LINK]
  • Metalville Records have announced July 23rd as the release date for the fifth album from German thrash metal quartet ERADICATOR, titled ‘Influence Denied‘. Their sound has typically been a crossing of Bay Area and classic German speed metal style. No preview yet but they’ve revealed some sharp cover art. Check it out over on their Facebook: [LINK]
  • vVurMzflessshhh Publishing have announced a special compilation of rarities from United States black metal legends VON, simply titled ‘Rarities Compilation’ and featuring 33 tracks which appear to span the full life of the band. Check out the tracklist/pre-orders over on Bandcamp: [LINK]
  • Los Angelese heavy rock heads DEATHCHANT are back with the first single from their second full-length, their first with RidingEasy Records. No doubt it my mind this was the exact right fit for the band/label as we touch upon ‘Waste‘ (due out this June 25th on all formats) and Deathchant’s knack for, as the press items put it: “Rumbling noise, chiming guitar melodies, bluesy boogie, NWOBHM thrash, COC grunge and punk fury all rear their head at times, sometimes all at once.” I was all for their debut album and I am so glad they’re back with another album. Get into the guitar tone on the main riffs for “Holy Roller” over on YouTube, and seriously check out their first album, too: [LINK]
  • Agonia Records and PESTILENCE have premiered the first single from their June 25th slated full-length ‘Exitivm‘ and hey, this “Morbvs Propagationem” song sounds like thrash influenced prog-death metal with some interesting use of keyboards. The groove is notably Pestilence and the keys give a kinda early Nocturnus-esque (or just ‘Testimony of the Ancients’) feeling and I say that as a very good thing. I’m into it, looking forward to the whole thing. Check out the song on YouTube: [LINK]
  • Ah, I mean… Ahhhhhh, the cloud-breaking stalk of Finnish death metal GHASTLY is back for another preview of their third album ‘Mercurial Passages‘, out this May 28th on 20 Buck Spin. Dip into the floating blasts and torrential mayhem of “Out Of The Psychic Blue” and get a whiff of the deeper skunk of this one. Ghastly are one of my favorite bands of the last several years and this song feels exactly right as I imagine the full trip. Today this second single arrives alongside pre-orders for the album, I got the pretty one, what with all them colors on it all splattered like, and I’ll probably go back in for a shirt here at some point. Hit ’em up over on the site or Bandcamp: [LINK]
  • Italian black/death metal band KRIGERE WOLF have announced they will release their latest EP ‘Blazing In A Purging Fire‘ this coming May 10th via Black Ritval Records on limited 10″ vinyl edition. No preview, just cover art etc., check out their Facebook: [LINK]
  • Edged Circle Productions have set June 25th as the release date for SIDEREAN‘s debut album, ‘Lost on Void’s Horizon’, on CD and vinyl LP formats. We’ve got the full 9+ minute title track, this album is going to be huge and again we’ve got one of my favorite bands of the last decade with one in the chamber, couldn’t be more stoked as I’ll be getting the special edition of this one! Check out “Lost on Void’s Horizon” over on Bandcamp: [LINK]

AGGRAVATOR – ‘Unseen Repulsions’ (Empire Records)

SITE WEEK IN REVIEW (4/10/21 – 4/16/21)

  • Annihilate This Week 4/10/21: “Nothing other than successfully sublimated rage.”
    • This year …From the Tomb becomes Annihilate This Week, still focusing on new releases from the week but now accumulating a New Releases list/discussion in addition to short reviews for around 5-10 new albums each week. It will now post every Saturday (or Sunday) to better fit my schedule.
    • This week I chose to cover 5 New Releases from April 16th. Favorites being Vetter and Incarceration.
  • An Early Stream of ANGRRSTH’s ‘Donikąd’ LP (2021) | PREMIERE
    • Thanks to Godz ov War and Angrrsth we got an early look at this exceptional debut LP from this Polish black metal band, who have a bit of an ‘epic’ streak a la late 90’s/early 2000’s Immortal as well as modern atmospheric black metal influences.

As I attempt to get ahead of the boon of important releases at the end of April you’ll note a thrash kick on my end and well, it is rare that a modern release schedule lines such releases up this neatly. In truth, I’ve simply pushed a bunch of black metal reviews to the weekend, leaving myself extra time with quite long and involved records from Spectral Lore, Odal, and Paysage D’Hiver. One substitution may occur, since I am not yet sure if I understand what ‘Geister’ is conveying. If I end up buying Spectral Wound‘s album that’ll be it. Also, I didn’t have much to say about Intonate‘s album but it is likewise a high class work if you’re a prog/tech death fellow.

ODAL – ‘Welten Mutter’ (Eisenwald)
