THIS WEEK IN NEWS (3/20/21 – 3/26/21)
- Oh, come on man. Don’t make me listen to FLUIDS. I’m not even sure what ‘Not Dark Yet‘ is supposed to mean, seems like some kind of hip-hop reference and I wouldn’t put it past a Mortician fan, neither. This’ll be their third album, looks like they toned down the gore on the cover for the Target mom/Instagram censor demographic. “Life Spent” is the first single, lots of talking, programmed drums, gargle noises, goregrinding etc. I get it though, I mean some people get inspired in the shower and uh, other people when they flush the toilet. The record’s release date is tentatively late Spring/early Summer but it’ll for sure be on Hell’s Headbangers Records in terms of the CD and vinyl LP issues. Go listen to “Life Spent” over on YouTube: [LINK]
- Nashville, Tennessee-based sludge/post-hardcore trio YAUTJA have signed to Relapse Records for the release of their second album ‘The Lurch‘ which is set to be released this coming May 21st. The first single “Tethered” shows some interesting mutations within their already fairly unique sound, leaning into noise rock influences without losing their caustic sludge edge, fans of Celeste and recent Converge might need to check this one out. As always, the Albini/Electrical Audio lends a unique live movement to the drums which I greatly appreciate. Watch the video for “Tethered” over on YouTube: [LINK]
- Finland’s premiere death metal abstraction GHASTLY are ready with their third full-length, ‘Mercurial Passages‘ having announced another alliance with 20 Buck Spin for this coming May 28th with pre-orders to spark up pretty soon. We are deep in the guts of the album as we discover the lead single, “Parasites”, a tunneling horror that echoes the finer qualities of their second record (and our Album of the Year for 2018) ‘Death Velour’. Love the sound of the production so far, love the album artwork, and definitely inspired by this first single. Check it out over on YouTube/Bandcamp: [LINK]
- Dark and experimental death metal band ADUANTEN have announced they will self-release their debut EP, ‘Sullen Cadence‘ this coming May 7th with a cassette version from Eihwaz Recordings to follow. Aduanten is essentially a spiritual successor to Vex, a progressive death metal band with a long history that’d disbanded in 2020. The core trio from that band also featured Obsequiae’s drummer. The EP features guest vocals/productions from members of Obsequiae and Horrendous as well. The band’s sound seems to aim for well, a combination of those elements a sort of earthen and triumphant movement that should be both familiar and a unique beast. Check out opener “The Drowning Tide” over on Bandcamp: [LINK]
- We are about a month away from gripping NEKROMANTHEON‘s brilliant third album ‘Visions of Trismegistos‘, out via Hell’s Headbangers/Indie Records this April 30th and if their first two singles didn’t get you hyped for it, this one should be the clincher. “Dead Temples” is a brutal thrasher, simple in theory but mind-altering in motion with its psych-shocked vocals effects on certain verses and classic thrashing riffs throughout. This is undoubtedly one of the better thrash-related releases this year and I’ve already spent a ton of time with it leading up to release. Check out “Dead Temples” over on YouTube: [LINK]
- The upcoming ninth full-length album from legacy progressive metal project PESTILENCE finds Patrick Mameli once again surrounded by an entirely new set of allies and now on the venerable Agonia Records. No preview tracks yet but we’ve gotten a lot of details on ‘Exitivm‘ recently, it’ll release on June 25th and you can suss out which option might interest you on the website they’ve launched specifically for the album. All I can say so far for sure is that the album art is pretty cool. : [LINK]
- Montreal black metal newcomers ORIFLAMME have conspired with the brilliant folks at Sepulchral Productions for their debut full-length ‘L’égide ardente‘ as they announce May 15th as the release date. So, they have made the digital version available May 24th on Bandcamp and YouTube but you can pre-order a copy on the label website as well. Really fine work, I have been listening to it all morning and already feel its spell sinking in. Give it a go: [LINK]
- The fine folks over at War Anthem Records have announced Spanish black/death metal band BALMOG‘s fourth full-length album ‘Eve‘ will release this coming May 28th on CD and digital versions. The vinyl version will be handled via Blackseed Productions and cassette through In Pulverem Mortis Prods. I am foaming at the mouth for this one, as their ‘Pillar of Salt’ EP was a revelation in 2020. A couple of interesting notes here — Underground legend Javi Félez is now part of the line-up and they’ve taken a “limitless” approach on this recording no longer confined to occult black/death parameters. Pre-orders are up on Bandcamp. The first single will also be part of an same-titled EP, “Desacougo”, which you can check out over on SoundCloud: [LINK]
- Wolves Of Hades have announced a new DÖDSRIT album entitled ‘Mortal Coil‘ is on its way this coming May 28th on all formats. The Swedish band are known for their crossing of atmospheric black metal with neocrust influences. “Shallow Graves” is the first single from the album but you’ll have to wait until March 31st for it to premiere online. Follow the band on Facebook to keep up with announcements: [LINK]
- Osmose Productions have announced April 30th as the release date for Norwegian black metal band NATTVERD‘s third album, ‘Vandring‘. This album is the finale of a conceptual trio of releases, centering around the Black Death. “Naar taaken fortaerer alt” is the first track up for preview, check it out over on Bandcamp: [LINK]
- The good folks at Eisenwald have announced they will be the vessel for German pagan black metal band ODAL‘s fifth album ‘Welten Mutter‘ this coming April 23rd on CD and vinyl LP. The first single from the album “…um Ewiges zu Schaffen” sways with despair as its intensity builds, a heavy metal epic that is still securely their brand of cult pagan black metal. I’ve been a fan since randomly buying ‘…wilde Kraft’ back in 2005, looking forward to catching up with their more recent discography and this album. Check out “…um Ewiges zu Scaffen” over on YouTube: [LINK]
