A weekly feature focusing on select heavy music news, primarily involving new and upcoming releases with a list of ’em provided at the end. This also serves as a week in review, collecting all of the most recent content on Grizzly Butts in a brief additional list. Want to see what came out this week? Read the “Annihilate This Week” column every Monday. If I can’t hear it, I won’t cover it! THIS WEEK IN NEWS (2/06/21 – 2/12/21)
- Blood Harvest Records have set April 30th as the release date for science fiction death metal band UNIVERSALLY ESTRANGED‘s debut album, ‘Reared Up in Spectral Predation‘, on all formats. Not only do we get a preview track but man, that Shoggoth Kinetics artwork kinda just sold the album to me. See if you’re into it over on Bandcamp: [LINK]
- Chaos Records have announced their signing of killer Guadalajara based Mexican death metal band MORBID MESSIAH. This means there is some new material on the way in the form of a ~22 minute EP titled ‘Disgorged in the Coffin‘. I’d really liked their debut on Memento Mori a few years back so I’m looking forward to more material. The band states: “This one will be heavier, deeper, and will contain more sickness and madness than the other recordings. It will contain six songs, each one with a lot of meaning for Morbid Messiah and a very raw production in artwork and music engineering.” Perfect, glad they’re keeping it raw and foul. Follow the band on Facebook and keep your eyes peeled: [LINK]
- Svart Records have announced ‘Vertigo‘, the new album from psychedelic doom rock artist JESS & THE ANCIENT ONES which’ll be released on May 21st this year. If you’re wondering where they’ve been since 2017, make sure you also check out Jasmin Saarela’s solo project Jess By the Lake. The announcement coincides with the release of the first video single for the album, “Summer Tripping Man” which you can jam over on YouTube: [LINK]
- Hammer of Hate have announced April 2nd as the release date for Finnish black metal band SIELUNVIHOLLINEN‘s fourth album, ‘Teloituskäsky‘. If you are not familiar with this band I think it’ll be a kick in the head to discover them here. Their sound is quite traditional in terms of second wave black metal but the punk influences are anthemic, lead driven and quite strong. I also appreciate that this band has equal hatred for both Christianity and Islam, that is the way it should be! Fuck all monotheism equally. Check out the very inspired chest-beating single “Murtunut Peili” over on Bandcamp: [LINK]
- One of very few visionary artists left within the realm of atmospheric black metal, Austrian musician Wintherr (Darkspace) and his main project PAYSAGE D’HIVER have released “Bluet” the first single from their forthcoming second (official) album ‘Geister‘ (which translates to “Ghosts”). The album is set for release on April 23rd through his own Kunsthall Produktionen. The band have shared details including cover art, tracklist, and various physical formats and variations. For now, go listen to “Bluet” over on Bandcamp: [LINK]
- Russian atmospheric black metal project NORDGEIST have released “Возмездие (Revenge)”, the first single from their debut full-length ‘Frostwinter‘, which will release this coming April 23rd through Kunsthall Produktionen. Lead by multi-instrumentalist and vocalist T. the last we’d heard of Nordgeist was a split with Wintercvlt in 2018. Check out “Возмездие (Revenge)” over on YouTube: [LINK]
- ‘The End Of All Things‘ is an elektro-thicc and catchy post-rock/alt-metal feeling record from CROWN, a project comprised of back of house and producers/sound designers that is teeming with creative modern touches. A bit like that latest Katatonia record if it were a bit more in touch with the electronica side of things. The album will be available on LP, CD and digital this coming April 16th, 2021 through Pelagic Records. Hit up Bandcamp to check it out: [LINK]
- Me Saco Un Ojo Ojo Records have set March 15h as the release date for the latest 7″ EP from Danish death metal act SULPHUROUS entitled ‘Encircling Darkness‘. Two songs, the title track being released on a very limited tape last year. Great to hear from this band and hopefully more in the future. Check it out over on Bandcamp: [LINK]
- ZEMIAL visionary Vorskaath has officially joined PROSCRIPTOR MCGOVERN’S APSÛ as their keyboardist. From the artist: “As Proscriptor and I have traversed parallel pathways since 1991, it was with unadulterated pleasure that I bring my craft to this redesigned order of Sumerian lore and metaphysical Arcana. For the new album, it was my quest and charge to deliver an (a)ethereal and artistic element, which united this opus of labyrinthine chaos. And So It Is Done.” This is brilliant news as I’ve wanted the two bands to merge minds since first hearing ‘Nykta’, which is still one of my favorite albums from 2013. The album will feature guest appearances from members of Ross The Boss, Aura Noir/Vltimas, Agressor, and Agatus. It is already stacking up to be a huge production yet they’ve also announced the album’s packaging will include ten separate portrait illustrations from Zbigniew Bielak. Follow Agonia Records on Facebook to keep up with the band, check out the tracklist etc.: [LINK]
- Ván Records have announced the debut album from Greek black metal project ZARATUS will be titled ‘The Days of Whore‘ and release this coming March 5th, Zaratus formed in 2018 between Bill Zobolas (Soulskinner, Thou Art Lord e.t.c) and Stefan Necroabyssius (Varathron, Katavasia, et al.) Two of my favorites from Greek extreme metal since forever and man, this album is something unexpected, some brilliant avant-garde moments that push it to become something more than just an ode to the greats of Hellas. Follow Zaratus on Facebook, check out their first EP and keep ‘The Days of Whore’ on your list for March: [LINK]
- Denver sludge metal trio ORYX will release their debut full-length ‘Lamenting A Dead World’ on Translation Loss Records this April 30th. The album will feature guest contributions from members of Blood Incantation and Primitive Man. Check out the amazing cover art and the brutal first single “Misery” over on Bandcamp: [LINK]

SITE WEEK IN REVIEW (2/06/21 – 2/12/21)
- Annihilate This Week 2/08/21: “Nous voulons chanter l’amour du danger, l’habitude de l’énergie et de la témérité.”
- This year …From the Tomb becomes Annihilate This Week, still focusing on new releases from the week but now accumulating a New Releases list/discussion in addition to short reviews for around 5-10 new albums each week. It will post every Monday.
- This week I chose to cover 5 New Releases from February 6th – 12th. The favorite(s) being Demon King & Evil.
- An Early Stream of ORDO CULTUM SERPENTIS’ ‘Derej Najash’ EP + INTERVIEW (2021) | PREMIERE
- Thanks to this fine multi-national ritual black/doom band, their label Signal Rex and their representation for this premiere and interview.
- An Early Stream of TORRESIAN CALL / WELLDWELLER ‘Split’ EP (2021) | PREMIERE
- Thanks to these two raw underground black metal bands, their label Eternal Death and their representation for this premiere.
Fairly slow news week, decent release week, busy work week for me otherwise. I’ve got a column that publishes every Monday (“Annihilate This Week”) which covers new releases so I won’t be redundant here. The two releases you should not overlook in the slightest are: Vestindien‘s ‘Null’, a 70’s rock and 80’s metalpunk fusion that is anthemic and somehow modern despite that description — and Abythic‘s ‘Dominion of the Wicked’, a fine step onto a freshened melodic death/doom landscape for the German shapeshifters. Also, Burning Coffin Records made the first EP from Horrifying ‘Euphoric Existence‘ (2012) available over on Bandcamp, elite death metal from Chile that you gotta know. What’s up next week? Empyrium, Spire (Aus), Szary Wilk, Dopelord, Spelljammer, Paranorm, and Voidwomb… maybe Sullen Guest too if I have extra time. Will shoot for An Exhaustive Study: Death Metal/Crust Punk Part III: 2001-2010 if I think it’ll be possible to finish up next week. Buy the latest Suffering Hour album, it is very good.
