NEWS, Week in Review & Upcoming Releases (1/22/21)

A weekly feature focusing on select heavy music news, primarily involving new and upcoming releases with a list of ’em provided at the end. This also serves as a week in review, collecting all of the most recent content on Grizzly Butts in a brief additional list. Want to see what came out this week? Read the “Annihilate This Week” column every Monday. If I can’t hear it, I won’t cover it! If you have new releases, show announcements, or important heavy music news that’ll be relevant or interesting to folks send it to: grizzlybutts@hotmail.com

THIS WEEK IN NEWS (1/16/21 – 1/22/21)

  • Chaos Records have announced they’ve signed Belgium-based death/doom metal band GATEWAY. Their first order of business will be a new EP, ‘Flesh Reborn‘, to be released later this year. The preview track “Slumbering Crevasses” is available over on Bandcamp: [LINK]
  • Necromance Records have announce they will partner with Base Record Production to release the latest album from well-loved melodic death metal band MISTWEAVER this coming February 25th, which they’ve titled ‘Swansong‘. The title track is up for preview on YouTube and it certainly has a ‘Elegy’-era Amorphis jaunt to its keyboard heavy sound. Highly anticipated stuff as these guys have really improved since their early 2000’s days. Check out “Swansong” here: [LINK]
  • German shapeshifters LUNAR SHADOW have announced they will release their third studio album, ‘Wish To Leave‘, on March 19th via Cruz Del Sur Music. They’ve given fair warning here that after two albums of traditional heavy metal with black metal influences the frontman will shift the direction of this album towards indie rock and post-punk sounds. I was going to say, that cover art kinda goes full on sadcore technicolor, I’m just glad it isn’t blackgaze. Looking forward to this one. Check out the cover art and more info over on Lunar Shadow’s Facebook page: [LINK]
  • Black metal band XEPER have revealed a second song from their fourth full-length ‘Ad Numen Satanae‘, which will be released on February 26th through Soulseller Records. The vinyl version will follow on May 7th. Check out “Riding the Spirit of Lilith” on Bandcamp: [LINK]
  • Canada’s finest, Temple of Mystery Records have announced June 2nd will be the day the hotly anticipated debut from traditional heavy metal band STARLIGHT RITUAL, ‘Sealed in Starlight’. You’ll recall the Montreal-based quintet from the Trapped Under Ice compilation a couple years back. Head over to Temple of Mystery’s Facebook for more info + killer album art: [LINK]
  • INFLABITAN is a name you’ll likely not recognize unless you’ve taken some major deep dives into the history of bands like Strid, Manes, and Dødheimsgard as its founding member was active in the early nineties formative years (and some reunions, too). His first album under this solo project ‘Intrinsic‘, will be released on February 26th through Soulseller Records. The recording will feature drums from AntiChristian of Tsjuder and all lyrics were written by one of my favorite artists, Aldrahn (Dødheimsgard, Urarv). Check out the album opener “Mental Radiation Fix” over on YouTube: [LINK]
  • Hells Headbanger’s Records have announced the signing of Texas death metal band CEMETARIAN. They’ve got a debut album in the works, slated for release later this year. In the meantime go get to know this band’s brutal kicks over on Bandcamp and stream their 2019 demo ‘Tomb of Morbid Stench‘: [LINK]
  • Black Lion Records have announced their signing of Danish death metal band MOTHER OF ALL alongside the reveal of their debut album ‘Age of the Solipsist‘ which arrives April 23rd. The project is headed by drummer/vocalist Martin Haumann a former key member of Myrkur and Afsky, but this project isn’t atmospheric black metal. Mother of All is a melodic and progressive death metal undertaking featuring session work from legendary bassist Steve Di Giorgio and Danish guitarist Frederik Jensen. If it has Di Giorgio on it, I’m into it. No preview just yet but pre-orders are up on Bandcamp: [LINK]
  • Purity Through Fire have announced March 21st will be the release date for Finn-Deutsche transplants SARKRISTA‘s third full-length ‘Sworn to Profound Heresy‘, on all formats. Fine Finnish black metal can be expected, these guys always deliver. Check out “The Beast Reborn” on YouTube to make sure it flies with you: [LINK]
  • Svart Records have announced yet another monster record for 2021, this one a remarkable doom/punk heavy rocked hybrid named THE LIMIT and their new album ‘Caveman Logic‘ which will be released this coming April 9th. Why am I so excited about this release already? Their first single “Black Sea” is absolutely affecting, a two minute disintegration sung by none other than goddamned Bobby Liebling of Pentagram fame, and with the melodic punk touch of Sonny Vincent (Testors) feeding the hooks to fish-mouthed idiots like me. I’m in, I want it, and I love that album cover too. The band also features folks involved in The Stooges and Dawnrider, the video is more brutal every time I watch it. Check it out over on YouTube: [LINK]
  • Bitter Loss Records have announced April 30th will be the release date for Australian old school death metal band THE PLAGUE‘s debut album ‘Within Death‘ on CD and vinyl formats. Pretty straight forward stuff to my ears at a glance but check it out over on Bandcamp and decide for yourself: [LINK]
  • San Jose, California-based grindcore trio SOCIOCLAST will release their self-titled debut this coming February 19th through Carbonized Records. Aiming for classic-yet-evolved grindcore sounds a la Assück and Discordance Axis, this band features current and former members of Deadpressure, In Disgust, and Mortuous. You’ll feel it the moment “Eden’s Tongue” hits, check it out on Bandcamp : [LINK]
  • Norwegian noise rock/art rock project ÅRABROT have announced and subsequently released their latest EP, ‘The World Must Be Destroyed‘. The five song EP is largely comprised of leftovers from the sessions for their last album and well, it rules. I’ve already listened a few times through and the title track is probably the big hit on it. The band have also announced their forthcoming double album ‘Norwegian Gothic‘, due out in April through Pelagic Records. Check out ‘The World Must Be Destroyed’ on YouTube: [LINK]
  • Hells Headbanger’s Records have set February 12th as the release date for MEDIEVAL DEMON‘s third album, ‘Arcadian Witchcraft‘, on CD format. The vinyl LP version will be released on March 12th. Love this band and had really enjoyed their last album. As it turns out you can already stream the whole album over on Bandcamp right now, check it out: [LINK]

SITE WEEK IN REVIEW (1/16/21 – 1/122/21)

  • Annihilate This Week 1/18/21: “A craftsman must probe to the very bottom of cruelty.”
    • This year …From the Tomb becomes Annihilate This Week, still focusing on new releases from the week but now accumulating a New Releases list/discussion in addition to short reviews for around 5-10 new albums each week. It will post every Monday.
    • This week I chose to cover 5 New Releases from January 16th-22nd. The favorite being Grabunhold‘s album.
  • An Exhaustive Study: Death Metal/Crust Punk [1988-Present] Part II – Megatrends in Uncertainty
    • This second entry in our Death/Crust anthology focuses on albums released between 1992 and 2000. This hybridization hadn’t really taken on any certain popularity yet but we find a few genuine crossover events blending hardcore punk and death metal in various ways. The next entry will cover 2001-2010 and we’ll see some boosts to the sub-genre crossover once the black metal/crust trend has its moment mid-decade before we get to more interesting modern bands like Bombs of Hades and Mammoth Grinder.

This week we’ve hit upon a few of the best albums of the month as well as our first review of a February release for the year. Two 10/10 records in a row? Yes, and at least one more once I start in on the early February stuff (The Ruins of Beverast, eh?). You might also note that I’m attempting a more casual voice on some reviews, this is generally for the sake of getting things done and not applying meaning to places where depth doesn’t exist. So, if I appear somewhat flippant on Speedkiller and Starer reviews it is because I am dialing away some matter-of-factness for the sake of better representing the releases’ attitude, effort level and general vibe. If this ends up a failed experiment, so be it, the main goal is to avoid getting hung-up saying a lot about records that don’t have a lot to say.
