THIS WEEK IN NEWS (1/09/21 – 1/15/21)

  • Spanish gothic doom metal band GOLGOTHA have released a new music video for the song “Don’t Waste Your Life” the sole new compositions from their upcoming EP ‘Remembering the Past – Writing the Future‘ which will be released this coming March 2nd through Xtreem Music. This will be the first set of recordings to feature ex-Helevorn guitarist Samuel Morales. Beyond this single the EP includes four re-recorded tracks from previous albums. The single is quite dramatic, more gothic than I usually go for, but fitting for Golgotha’s style. I’m a bit more eager to hear the re-recordings. • Norwegian composer/guitarist Roy Westad‘s solo extreme metal project ILLT has released their first single, “Scythian King” to presage an upcoming release for Indie Recordings. They’ve referred to the style of the band as a “sandbox” and “culmination of years of appreciation” for extreme metal, expect something along the lines of black n’ roll or nearby. The debut album, which isn’t clearly suggested quite yet, will feature popular session/current Megadeth drummer Dirk Verbeuren. Check out “Scythian King” over on YouTube: [LINK]
  • Shadow Records/Regain Records have announced they’ll release AKEFAL‘s debut EP ‘Opus Darkness’ on CD/LP this coming March 30th. Akefal is a recently formed project featuring folks from Ultra Silvam and Taphos and yes, it sounds just as awesome as you’d think. Check out the full EP over on Bandcamp: [LINK]
  • Swedish black metal trio SERPENTS have released a lyric/music video for “Worship the Reprobate” an aggressive, somewhat catchy track taken from their most recent EP ‘The Brimstone Clergy‘, which was unleashed by War Anthem Records mid-November last year. This band has certainly flown under the radar considering how venomous their black/thrashing melodic black metal sound is. Check it out over on YouTube: [LINK]
  • Retro Finnish heavy metal band CORONARY have released the first single from their upcoming debut on Cruz Del Sur Music. The title track from ‘Sinbad’ is entirely memorable, a catchy 80’s heavy metal stomp that does a fine job honing in on their speed metallic appeal without losing the German steel edge of their demo. The album is out February 19th, the single is available over on YouTube: [LINK]
  • Washington, DC-based progressive doom metal trio MYOPIC and Baltimore, Maryland-based solo doom/post-metal project AT THE GRAVES will release a collaborative full-length entitled ‘A Cold Sweat Of Quiet Dread‘ this March 12th through Grimoire Records. I’ve had my ear on At the Graves for a few years now so I’m interested to see how this album turns out. So far I think pre-orders are up over on Bandcamp: [LINK]
  • Finland’s own Saturnal Records have announced they’ve teamed up with black metal legends BARATHRUM for the March 5th release of a special demo focused triple vinyl boxset titled ‘Demo(no)s‘. This will include all of the seminal band’s studio material prior to their 1995 debut ‘Hailstorm’. Hugely underrated band and a truly inspired connection between traditional doom metal and first wave black metal. Pre-orders and more info over on Saturnal’s shop: [LINK]
  • Svart Records have announced they will release ‘Trivial Visions‘ the latest album from Italian psychedelic prog rock act LA MORTE VIENE DALLO SPAZIO this coming March 26th. They’ve released the a mind-spanking spaced groove to celebrate the occasion in the form of a music video for “Cursed Invader”. This has already proven a drum-biting earworm via hypnotic repetition and mounds of trailing psychedelic whurr. The video itself is no less of a satisfying blur, check it out over on YouTube: [LINK]
  • The second album from Belgium’s THORIUM will be titled ‘Empires in the Sun‘ and will be released March 5th through Freya Records. If you don’t recognize the name you might note that most of these fellowes had played in a recent formation of Ostrogoth ’til about 2018. Check it out over on Bandcamp: [LINK]
  • Signal Rex have announced February 12th as the release date for ORDO CULTUM SERPENTIS‘ debut EP, ‘Derej Najash‘, on cassette tape. The band is a blackened death/doom collaboration between South Korean musician V. and Mexican artist Fr. Der Cadaver. The first of two “chapters” has been unveiled for preview in the form of the ~13 minute “Chapter I” which you can check out over on YouTube: [LINK]
  • Willowtip Records have announced the debut album from San Francisco, California’s OMINOUS RUIN will be titled ‘Amidst Voices That Echo In Stone‘ and will be released this coming February 26th. The opening track, “Ritual”, neatly showcases their nuclear technical brutal death metal sound, check it out over on Bandcamp: [LINK]
  • Atmospheric black metal band SOLBRUD stand out beyond the status quo for their intion to make each live performance something intimate and uniquely revealed. In preparation for the release of their upcoming audio/visual live album ‘Levende I Brønshøj Vandtårn‘ they have given a glimpse of a live video for “Øde Lagt” which will be included on the DVD which will be inclided with both CD and LP versions of the live album. Each version releases this coming March 26th thanks to the good folks at Eisenwald. The first thing I noticed is that the location is well considered, the camera work is directed/produced, and the sound is fantastic even if I’m not familiar with the band’s work. Check out “Øde Lagt” over on YouTube: [LINK]
  • Dark Essence Records have announced they will release VESTINDIEN‘s upcoming record ‘Nill’ on February 12th. The first single “Meldrøye” shows some considerable evoltion for the band who’d been on hiatus for several years prior. The band suggests this piece, and the greater album intends to connect the mind with its greater environs, stating: “Exploring and expanding one’s mind is crucial to help us understand that we are not placed above nature. We are nature.” and this mindset only serves to intensify the memorable verve of their blackened punk influenced sound, which moves away from hardcore punk aggression towards something a bit more black n’ roll without sounding cheap or “fun” as that might suggest. It really needs to be heard to be understood. Check it out over on Bandcamp: [LINK]
  • Finally, some truly fuckin’ disgusting riffs in 2021! Finnish death-grinders CADAVERIC INCUBATOR have revealed the first taste of their latest thrashing Xysma-barfed mania with some seriously infectious and crunchy shit via “Necropolis”, the first single from their second album ‘Nightmare Necropolis‘ which’ll hit us via Hell’s Headbangers Records this coming Spring 2021. Check out “Necropolis” over on YouTube: [LINK]
  • Xtreem Music did a great job of reissuing Florida death metal act KILLING ADDICTION‘s 1993 debut back in 2018 and just a few years later the label reports the band are finalizing the recording of their long awaited 2nd full-length album. The working title is ‘Mind of a New God‘ and is planned for release this coming April 6th. So far we’ve only gotten the announcement and some pretty sharp album art which you can check out over on Facebook: [LINK]

HULDER – Godslastering: Hymns of a Forlorn Peasantry (Iron Bonehead)

SITE WEEK IN REVIEW (1/09/21 – 1/15/21)

  • Annihilate This Week 1/11/21: “Defiling the concord which exists among you.”
    • This year …From the Tomb becomes Annihilate This Week, still focusing on new releases from the week but now accumulating a New Releases list/discussion in addition to short reviews for around 5-10 new albums each week. It will post every Monday.
    • This week I chose to cover 5 New Releases from January 8th-15th but each week includes a short write-up on all of the new releases that I feel warrant closer listening. Favorites include: Crystal Viper, Aberration.

A bit behind on reviews this week, I’d gotten too involve in a couple of complex records and a few others just weren’t up to standard once I’d took to them with a more serious ear. I am not sure that I will push to finish the write-ups on Portrayal of Guilt and Gravehuffer unless they begin to feel more inspirational. I am planning on doing a monthly “Shit I missed” column so, anything I miss will… end up there. I’ll be done editing the Void review today, Devotion will follow early Saturday.
