This’ll also include a list of upcoming releases and some preliminary notes on upcoming reviews or coverage. If I can’t hear it, I won’t cover it! THIS WEEK IN NEWS (6/06/20 – 6/12/20)

  • How’s about a huge bummer to kick off the weekend? Eclectic and enthusiastic French heavy music label DEADLIGHT RECORDS have shuttered business some weeks ago. Twelve years and ~75 records later, this comes as sour news during hard times. Some of my favorite releases of theirs came from Mercyless, Sofy Major, Merauder, Freya, Witchthroat Serpent, Crusher, Abrahma, Ataraxie, Cowards, and the most recent Verbals Razors. R.I.P. : [Click/Tap HERE for more info]
  • Ontario, Canada based progressive death/thrash metal band ÆPOCH have something a little bit different than their 2018 debut full-length ‘Awakening Inception’ with regard to their latest EP ‘The Scryer’, a set of songs seemingly written prior to their debut but finished afterwards. Despite how confusing that might be, the first preview track “A Brainwashed Civilization” is actually pretty good, less melodic and more traditional featuring a very prominent fretless bass performance that I greatly appreciate. Check out the song on Bandcamp and look forward to the EP’s full release on July 31st: [Click/Tap HERE for more info]
  • I’m loving all of the fresh faces in 20 Buck Spin‘s roster lately and among the newly announced is metallic hardcore act TERMINAL NATION who hail from Little Rock, Arkansas. You might know ’em from their split with parody band Neckbeard Deathcamp last year or the various 7″ records they’ve put out these last several years. Their debut LP is ready, entitled ‘Holocene Extinction‘, and will feature a strong evolution of their “death metal heavy 90’s metallic hardcore” style. If you were into the latest Xibalba and Creeping Death albums, this is your jam. All formats release August 7th, pre-orders up soon. I like the Blood for Blood style slow burn of the title track, which you can preview over on Bandcamp, but I’m gonna reserve judgement ’til I’ve heard the whole shebang. Definitely appreciate the gigantic sound via Audiosiege, and love the Burke artwork truly a beautiful thing: [Click/Tap HERE for more info]
  • Purity Through Fire have set July 15th as the international release date for German black metal act EISENKULT‘s debut album, ‘…gedenken wir der Finsternis’, on all formats. Eisenkult consists of musicians who are best known for their (largely solo) work(s) in Mavorim, Totenwache, and Muechelmord, so expect true black metal with a melodic edge, textural guitar work, and triumphant attitudes. Check this out if you loved the most recent The True Werwolf record. Check out the title track over on YouTube: [Click/Tap HERE for more info]

  • Kitsch, schlock, ‘sploitation and bikes can only mean one thing! That goddamned THE DEATH WHEELERS gang are at it again, this second album is the unofficial soundtrack to non-existent bikesploitation picture ‘Divine Filth’ the album’ll bear that same title and release September 11th by way of the fine folks over at RidingEasy Records. A bass guitar-forward instrumental rock, proto-metal, punk n’ surf slammed kick to the tailbone in every note if you weren’t as on board with their debut a few years back hell, this one is even gnarlier. Video for the title track is up on YouTube and the song is over on Bandcamp: [Click/Tap HERE for more info]
  • Russian brutal death metal band OSSUARY ANEX have revealed details for their third full-length ‘Obscurantism Apogee‘, which will be released this September 22nd by way of Xtreem Music on CD. Their most recent EP was so goddamned heavy I’ve been looking forward to thier next foot forward and they’ve kept it from the sound of the first preview track “Firestorm”, which you can listen to over on YouTube: [Click/Tap HERE for more info]
  • Massive news for all of my fellow Greek black metal junkies as Floga Records have announced they will release the second KATAVASIA record ‘Magnus Venator‘ on all formats this September 4th. Katavasia formed way back in 2014 between members of Varathron, Hail Spirit Noir, and Melan Selas so you know they’ve got riffs and Stefan Necroabyssious has never been on a bad album as far as I’m concerned. This record also features the new addition of D.K. (Melan Selas, Riffobia) on guitars so, there is a lot to look forward to this time around. No preview tracks yet but you can watch some clips of the vocals being recorded (with backing tracks) over on YouTube, sounds amazing!: [Click/Tap HERE for more info]

  • Kosmische rock, prog-psych and a rainy day in Tampere are the right keywords for creating the right headspace for the syrupy post-rock spaced waves of Finnish prog-psych rockers POLYMOON. ‘Caterpillars of Creation’ is the title of their debut album with Svart Records and it’ll be out September 4th this year. The first single, “Malama”, clarifies their thickly layered, shimmering skeleton of aqueous bass and slippery guitar work, humming synth-like pop rock kicks keep things moving but never in a dreary or overly complex direction. The drumming is a little bit buried but pay close attention to the time, the core rhythms feel very mid-70’s to my ears, upward swinging and anthemic but never blues-obsessed. If you’re into that sort of thing check out “Malama” over on YouTube: [Click/Tap HERE for more info]
  • Fucking hell, I’ve been waiting for this one since I was what… sixteen years old? And I’m getting fuckin’ old! The big news this week is that MESSIAH have announced their official return to studio material, which comes after a 26 year wait. These Swiss legends of death/thrash metal, who’d gotten their start way before either sub-genre was totally real, will return with a new album titled ‘Fracmont‘ to be released via High Roller Records this September 11th. Who can wait that long?! Oh, we don’t have to since they’ve announced a three song EP, ‘Fatal Grotesque Symbols – Darken Universe‘ which will contain a brand new song (Click Here for Trailer) and re-recorded versions of “Space Invaders” and “Extreme Cold Weather” each featuring different guest vocalists Chrigel Glanzmann (Eluveitie) & Sven Gross (Fleshcrawl) respectively. The EP will be available on August 7th on CD and vinyl, pre-orders are up oh High Roller‘s website: [Click/Tap HERE for more info]

  • Australian dissonant deathgrind trio RESIN TOMB have announced their self-titled debut 10″ EP will release July 31st through Brilliant Emperor Records. Resin Tomb features members of Descent and Snorlax and though I wouldn’t say they sound like either this first preview track “Penance” brings some of those core sensibilities along for the ride. Check it out on Bandcamp: [Click/Tap HERE for more info]
  • Blackened death metal lifers INSATANITY are set to release their second LP ‘Hymns Of The Gods Before‘, this June 19th through CDN Records. Best known for their underrated 1996 debut ‘Divine Decomposition’ these guys have been intermittently active over the years with EP releases ever 6-7 years but a second album from these guys should be a big deal for folks who love Incantation, Funebrarum, Imprecation and their ilk with a strong crossing of brutality and slower movements. Go listen to the first single, “Ashes of the Apostle,” over on YouTube: [Click/Tap HERE for more info]
  • Everyone’s favorite fuckin’ thrash band this last decade, POWER TRIP recently put out a live record, recorded two summers ago at Neumo’s in Seattle, and it sounds great. I was there and I haven’t seen ’em since, so this is actually pretty rad to remember. Go grab ‘Live in Seattle 05.28.2018‘ and throw some money at the band, they’ve got canceled tours to make up for and albums to make: [Click/Tap HERE for more info]
  • Get ready for this one, I’m stoked as fuck. Me Saco Un Ojo Records and Dark Descent Records will collaborate to release the second album from Australian death metal big-kongs FACELESS BURIAL this August 7th on all formats. It’ll be titled ‘Speciation and run ~40 minutes long. I’ve been a huge fan of these guys since their first album and loved where they went on their most recent EP. Check out the teaser video for the album over on YouTube: [Click/Tap HERE for more info]
  • Nice! Now that pre-orders are open for BEDSORE‘s debut album ‘Hypnagogic Hallucinations‘, and a t-shirt design is up too, they’ve released a second song up for preview: “Brains on the Tarmac” which you might recognize from their demo tape. Awesome to see how they’ve reworked it since then and it gives a more clear look at their full-force sound on the LP. Fan-fuckin’-tastic song. Check it out of you love Ghastly, Morbus Chron and their ilk as much as I do: [Click/Tap HERE for more info]
  • Here’s something unexpected but ridiculously good, a 16-bit chiptune album from Greek musician/producer BOB KATSONIS (ex-Firewind) which will be released on Symmetric Records this July 3rd. The main theme for ‘Amadeus Street Warrior’ is up on Bandcamp for preview. I listen to Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo music on a daily basis and really appreciated the bits of say Capcom-era drum reverb, the modulation you’d only hear on Technosoft games etc. Lots of great touches and an upbeat melody. Check it out over on Bandcamp: [Click/Tap HERE for more info]
  • NOTABLE ALBUMS AT PRESS THIS WEEK FROM: Astriferous, Rope Sect, Skeleton, Persekutor, Faceless Burial, Messiah, Decrepid, Insatanity, Bear Mace, Resin Tomb, Power Trip, Prosanctus Inferi, Putrid Offal, Pessimist, Unborn Suffer, Starmen, Las Historias, Entartung, Pazuzu, Dark Rites, Temple Nightside, Descend, Drouth, Trainer, Aepoch, Trial and several more.
